The first week of nursery is often harder for the parent than for the child. One thing at least can be sorted out in advance: the clothes. Below is a list that genuinely works for a three year old.
What goes in the bag
- Two t shirts or tops
- Two pairs of trousers, ideally elasticated
- Two pairs of socks
- Two sets of underwear
- One warm gilet or jumper
- A bag for wet clothes
Write your child's name on everything by hand. There are twenty identical blue t shirts at nursery, and that one minute saves a lot of searching.
The main rule: the child has to manage alone
A three year old cannot do up a button, but can pull off elasticated trousers without help. Choose clothes that support that independence:
- Trousers with elastic rather than a button and zip
- Tops with a wide neck so the head goes through easily
- A gilet or jumper that comes off in one movement
- Shoes with a strap fastening
These are small things, but at nursery a child needs them five times a day.
Fabric and colour
Cotton is good because it breathes and survives washing. Dark or patterned colours are practical; white lasts about a day. Seasonal items at reduced prices are on the sale page, and warm layers are in autumn clothing.
