Between two and six, a boy's clothes take two exams: the yard and the washing machine. A lovely shirt that cannot survive two washes is a poor buy at this age.
The list that covers a week
- Five t shirts, two of them long sleeved
- Three pairs of trousers: two joggers and one pair of jeans
- Two jumpers or sweatshirts
- One gilet
- One smarter set for visiting
- Five pairs of socks
This is the minimum that works. Everything beyond it is a want rather than a need.
What to look at when buying
The waist
An elasticated waist is the most practical at this age. A boy has to manage his own trousers in the bathroom, and a button makes that harder.
The knees
In the yard the knees go first. Some brands reinforce them, and the difference really shows.
The fabric
Cotton breathes and does not irritate the skin, while a little polyester helps the garment keep its shape. There is more in our article on cotton.
The size
Go one size up if you are between two options. Our size chart will help you decide.
How to make them last
Wash a stain out straight away, before it dries. Wash joggers and jumpers at thirty degrees and use the tumble dryer sparingly. There is more in our washing and storing guide.
Where to find them
The shop has a page of its own for clothing for boys. By season, see autumn and winter items, and separately shoes and hats.
