Clothes for a girl at nursery and outdoors: a practical set

Published 28 August 2026

Children's clothing for girls

A pretty dress is right for a party, but nursery asks for something else. Here is a set that works together, survives a lot of washing and lets a girl dress herself.

A girl's wardrobe is often full and yet there is nothing to wear in the morning. The reason is simple: the items are lovely on their own and do not go together. Below is a set that works as a whole.

A basic set for one season

  • Five t shirts or tops, two of them long sleeved
  • Two pairs of trousers or leggings with elastic
  • One dress you can also play in
  • Two warm layers, a jumper and a gilet
  • Three pairs of socks and one pair of tights

Nine items and the week is covered. Everything after that is an addition rather than a necessity.

What to check before buying

Movement matters more than detail. A girl at nursery runs, sits on the floor and paints. So look for:

  • An elasticated waist rather than a button
  • A neck wide enough for the head to pass through easily
  • Tights or shorts to go under a dress
  • As few sparkly or detachable details as possible

Small pom poms, bows and beads look lovely, but they often come off in the first wash.

Colours that go together

Take two base colours for the bottoms, for example navy and grey. Then any top will match both. One or two patterned pieces are enough to keep the set from being dull.

Where to find them

The shop has a page of its own for clothing for girls. By season you will find autumn and winter items, and alongside them socks and tights and accessories.

For sizing, read the size chart first, and the full nursery list is in our nursery article.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dress suitable for nursery?
It works if it is worn over tights or cycling shorts and does not restrict movement. A very long or layered dress gets in the way of playing.
How many items are needed for one season?
Five tops, three bottoms and two warm layers are plenty. What matters is that they go together, so no morning is spent choosing.
How do I pick colours so everything matches?
Choose two or three base colours for the bottoms and match every top to them. That way any t shirt goes with any pair of trousers.
