European sizes: what 98 / 104 and 110 / 116 mean

Published 28 August 2026

European brand children's clothing with its label

A European label carries two numbers, and they are not an age. They are the child's height in centimetres. Once you know this, buying online gets much easier.

If you have ever bought clothes from a European brand, you will have seen 86 / 92, 98 / 104 or 110 / 116 on the label. Those numbers are neither an age nor a US size. They are the child's height in centimetres.

Why height and not age

Two children of the same age can differ by ten centimetres. That is why European brands chose height: it is the one measurement that works the same way for every child. The age is still printed on the label, but only as a hint.

What the two numbers mean

98 / 104 means the item fits a child between 98 and 104 centimetres tall. Some brands print a single number, for example just 104. It means the same thing: the upper limit is 104 centimetres.

  • 86 / 92 is roughly 1 to 2 years
  • 98 / 104 is roughly 2 to 4 years
  • 110 / 116 is roughly 4 to 6 years
  • 122 / 128 is roughly 6 to 8 years

The full chart is on our size guide page, and there is more detail in our size chart article.

How this compares with other countries

  • A European 98 is roughly a US 3T
  • A European 104 is roughly a US 4T
  • A European 110 is roughly a UK 4 to 5 years
  • A European 116 is roughly a UK 5 to 6 years

These matches are approximate. If you are between two options, take the larger one.

How the shop knows the size

Every product on our site has its size copied from the label and the age stated as well. You can search by either in the filter: open kids clothing and choose an age or a size on the left.

Our brands are European, so this chart applies to all of them. What sets each one apart is described in our brands article, and the full list is on the brands page.

Frequently asked questions

What age is 98 / 104?
Roughly two to four years. The exact answer is in the height: this size is for a child between 92 and 104 centimetres.
Is an American 4T the same as 104?
Approximately. A 4T corresponds to a height of about 102 to 104 centimetres, which is a European 104. The exact match depends on the brand.
What if the label carries only one number, for example 104?
It means the item is made for a child up to 104 centimetres tall. Two numbers simply show a range, and a single number shows its upper end.
