Choosing a gift is hardest when you do not know the child well. One rule helps here too: match the age, and choose something that will be used every day.
For a baby, 0 to 12 months
At this age the gift is used by the parent rather than the child. Soft cotton items, a silicone bib, muslins and a set of bodysuits one size larger than the baby wears now are all good choices. There is a list of what this age needs in our newborn article.

1 to 3 years
The child is walking, touching and turning everything over. Developmental toys, a soft toy, a first book or a set of plates and cups all work. Among clothes, the best gift is a set where the top and the bottom go together.

3 to 6 years
At this age a child has opinions. What works is whatever goes to nursery: a bag, a water bottle, a lunch box, or a t shirt with a favourite character on it. Accessories are a good choice because there is no risk of getting a size wrong.

From 6 years
At school age practical things are appreciated more: a bag, a warm gilet, a good pair of shoes. Have a look at shoes and winter clothing.
What to leave on the shelf
- Very noisy toys that need batteries
- Clothes in exactly the size the child wears today
- Something that only exists for a photograph and is worn once
